I Let Myself Free From The Typical Indian Mindset

Retrospective of my journey from the naive younger self to this 22-year-old adult, my journey has been worthwhile. As children, we follow the footsteps of our elders, imprinting the values we are exposed to without questioning the rationality and as we grow old, these values become enrooted in our subconscious minds as onus, until and unless we train our brain to take shape in adolescence through experiences.

The dwelling from an Indian conservative household, immured in customs, traditions and omens, a segment of our self rests subdued from freedom. I am one of them and there are a lot more like me. All these years I or we have been a bystander to ill societal norms been glorified for years and yet still the margin hasn’t subsided.

I appreciated myself for not indulging in these ideologies blindly instead scrutinized them straight up to the practical aspects. And trust me, I’ve grown to be a liberal-minded woman and it tickles me that next time someone pinpoints questioning my lifestyle of not meeting their hierarchical standards, I’d be more than glad to revert to a more analytical interpretation.

You’d want to hear some of the social etiquettes that caused disparity in me triggered enough to jot it down here.

The problem with this society is not grasping the concept of minding their own business. They are so deeply entitled to the hierarchical customs that anything outside that box is considered derogatory. The irony here is that India is coined as a democratic country but people here glorify norms that condemn an individual’s right and are judged for their expression of freedom.

For example, a girl is supposed to be calm in an Indian household whilst one who voices her opinion is looked down on as arrogant and spoiled by modern ideologies. A few days ago a man killed his wife on the streets in broad daylight yet no one came forward to rescue(the man was weaponed though) but a mass crowd would gather to accuse a couple of PDA.

I am just comparing two events where this same crowd gets blinded to the prevailing injustices in society. You are supposed to follow the system- grow up, get a job, get married, welcome a baby. That's the reach. A girl is judged by her clothes.

LGBTQ community still make an effort to be treated equally. Men are supposed to earn more than their counterpart and many more. I could make a list of suppositions the society has thrived to pass on to generations that are groundless.

A lot has improved but yet more than half the population still adhere to older beliefs and practices, mostly elderly people. These stereotypes directly affect the mindset of the mass resulting in a toxic outlook on life. Society still inflicts a mark of cause for India being in the ‘developing’ zone.

Over these years, I have perceived the western ideals are far better as compared. At least you can thrive in your own choices, independently, with no one evaluating you, no gender discrimination, and nobody forcing you to live in a restricted system. Despite all these prejudices, I have paved myself away these few years, followed my conscience at my free will and here I am, standing tall leaving behind societies narratives.

Well if you have reached the end do leave a review and my heartiest thanks to you for devoting your time to this piece. Much love.
