How to make the US government function again

There is no universal right to privacy. Government cannot regulate power companies. We have no right to clean air. Lame, minimal limits are heralded as success on guns. The filibuster prevents Congress from doing almost anything at all. Presidents can pardon their co-conspirators in a coup attempt. People refuse subpoenas and no one prosecutes them. The Supreme Court refuses to protect minority rights.

Doesn’t it make you go: What the hell? It does me.

Although it all started a long time ago, these recent stunning changes are overwhelming precisely because they strike at the heart of the government to do anything at all. As we and the world face enormous problems, the Supreme Court is dismantling the powers of the federal government. They say EPA cannot regulate power plant emissions. They say women can’t make their own decisions regarding their bodies and that the court has no role in protecting their right to do so; states, however, can make better decisions over women’s bodies. The Court is eviscerating our processes for self-government using a literalistic interpretation of a document that was never supposed to be understood that way, rather than defending the principles of self government. Indeed, the court’s vision appears to be that the only thing the federal government can do is write checks and send weapons.

Congress is locked up by its own anachronistic rules, including the filibuster and majority party domination, which prevents it from addressing the problems we need to address. It has been stymied by gerrymandered districts that the Supreme Court says are just fine, even though they woefully misrepresent the American people. More Democratic votes are cast for Congress than Republican votes in nearly every election, but Republicans often win control. That’s how you get Supreme Court justices who rule according to bizarre ideologies that are out of step with the people, as well as a court that refuses to defend democracy.

Former President Trump tried to turn the government into his own private…
