Stop Promoting A Uniform Idea Of Success

Let’s redefine what success looks like!

Go to school. Attend college. Get a high paying job. Buy a luxurious house. Have a great family life. Congratulations! You are now successful!

What if I tell you, you’ve got it all wrong?

People often imagine success to be an end goal that is achieved after ticking off a few things in the list that is drafted by the society, over a period of time. We are judged, advised and assured based on one specific definition of success in spite of it being subjective.

We want to be successful so that we can be happy. But as said by Yuval Noah Harari in the book Sapiens:

What is success then?

Honestly, you need to figure that out for yourself.

Let’s see ways in which you can define your own success:

Create small buckets of life: Often success is just put under the bucket of financial measurability, ignoring that life isn’t just built on money. There are various small buckets you can divide your life into like, spiritual, financial, health, family, etc.
Set goals: After you have identified the different aspects of your life, you can set small and long-term goals for each of them. This will help you in the identification of what is it that you’re looking for and not what is being told to you.
Understand what makes you happy: Though we cannot deduce happiness to a single thing, we often know things that make us happy. For some, it might be spending time with their family, and for some, it might be hitting new targets each month.
Don’t compare notes: Do not compare yourself to what others are doing but rather see what you were yesterday and what you are today.

In simple words,

While a 15 hour work day makes me think I am successful, for some, it might be living alone on an island. So, learn to have a tailor-made definition of success, rather than a uniform one.
