Does Anxiety Run Your Business?

Anxiety can be a tricky little beast — most of the time we let it drive our actions without realizing it. If you are unable to set aside a worry, you’re letting anxiety take over.

The thing is, we don’t make the best decisions for our business or for our life when we are fueled by anxiety. We doubt too much. We over analyze. We put off making a decision too long.

Business likes speed and decisiveness. Anxiety slows us down. Anxiety is the enemy of clear thinking, strategic thinking, and common sense.

Here’s what our job is:
Our responsibility is to monitor our anxiety and throw some cold water on it when it starts to dictate our actions. As business owners (well, really, as mature humans) we are responsible for keeping our anxieties at bay. This has nothing to do with academic degrees — it has to do with emotional maturity and the ability to calm ourselves when we get anxious. Acting out of a calm mind will always get you further than acting out of anxiety.

Part of “adulting” is normalizing the anxiety we feel, calming it, and taking action despite it. This is one time in life when practice makes perfect. Do what you do to calm yourself (I suggest breath work, a walk, and a talk with someone who knows you well.) Then set the anxiety on the shelf and move forward. Anxiety is not the friend of courage, but it can walk alongside just fine.

Till again,

Sue
