The Cyber Security Threat to India

In a recent study, it was revealed that out of 15 Indian cities, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bengaluru have faced the maximum number of cyber-attacks. In the Annual Cyber Security Report by CISCO, 53% of cyber-attacks caused more than $500K of financial loss to organizations in 2018.

According to a report by a major news channel, it was reported that India faced 1852 Cyber Attacks each minute last year. The attacks in 2019 worsen over time with the largest attack happening on a Nuclear Power Plant in the month of September. But nothing seems to change in the country and for that we have to take an Inside Look.

In 2015, When the current Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, came into power, He started a digital India campaign with main goal of connecting rural India with internet and improving computer literacy. The program’s growth was very well. Within a few years and with the help of services of Jio, airtel and others, India by the end of this year will have about 700 Million monthly active internet subscribers. Now that calls for major IT infrastructure that needs to be in place which is also being done with the companies like Airtel, Jio and Vodafone-Idea. But there are some major challenges in the road.

First is talent, India has long been known as one of the Technological Hub of South east Asia. India also has a huge population and out of which most of them are young. India is in a place where the world population is aging like Japan, India is a young nation but the education system doesn’t help. 60% of all the STEM Graduates each year in India remain underpaid or unemployed. The reason not being the job creation but they just simply lack the skills they need. And those who have the skills just go to different country each year. The Schools in india are in need of some serious help. In a report it was revealed that only 26% of total Indian schools has computers this being in the times of Digital India Initiatives.

Second is the lack of the Cyber Security Awareness in country. According to a report by IBM in 2018, India needed a whopping 3 Million Cyber Security professionals but the supply was a measly 100,000 which is only 3.3% of the demand. Around 25–30% of students in India get’s to know something about cyber security first time when the enter colleges. Cyber Attacks on India is growing at 22% each year, but the growth of cyber security professionals is not even half of that.

These are some of the main factors which is creating a major problem for a country like India when there is a major push towards digitalism. A report done by Agoda, claims that Cyber security and lack of local language availability keeps the billion people coming online still in 2019. An app called truecaller revealed that though india ranked 5th on the Spam calls, which by the way is also a major security threat to the country, Spam calls and messages in the country grew by 15%.

In recent years there has been some major policy changes in the country, but almost none of them took place around education and India does needs it.

So that was a look on India’s Cyber Security situations. Well do let me know what you think about the problem down in the comments. And Don’t forget to hit the like button if you do liked it. Subscribe for more videos like this. We publish videos every Saturday. Thank You.
