THE NIGHT RIDER

Evans was in third grade when he asked his mother if he could join the orchestra and be a “band nerd.” From there he picked up the trombone and continuously added to his knowledge of instruments until he had 13 under his belt.

“I play the trombone, guitar, bass, drum, piano, viola, trumpet, french horn, baritone, tuba, vocals, harmonica and ukulele,” Evans said.

“Music is my outlet to the world… I don’t really make friends in a conventional way. I use music to do that,” he said, “I’ve always been low-key kind of introverted and music is my way to be like ‘Yo, this is who I am. This is what I’m about. This is what I stand for and if you’ve got a problem with that, fuck off.’”

Freshman Chemistry student, Demarre Evans, rides his long board while playing the guitar Sept. 22, 2017 outside of Kent State’s Student Center. “My job description is a boundary breaker,” Evans said.

Even though music takes first place in Evans’ heart, he said it is just a hobby due to the slim-to-none chances that he would make it in the music industry. “I’m just chillin’ with chemistry, its not hard for me, so, why not?”

Even as just a hobby, Evans said, “music has been my partner in crime. My best friend. My sidekick, or whatever you want to call it. Music has been a journey that is probably never going to come to an end. Music has been my coping mechanism for losses of close friends, family members, and even myself at times.”

With the support of his friends and family, Evans said he is going to continue to “break boundaries,” in his future career as a chemist and as a “for fun” musician, noting maybe one day he will create a piano-like instrument based off of the periodic table.
