Snowshoes and Perspectives

For the past two years, heavy snowfalls have made the road to our house in western North Carolina impassible. As such, I’ve always moved one of our cars down to the bottom of our mountain due to the town plow not addressing our need for snow removal for at least 3 days after a storm had laid our winding drive to waste. That way, our car would have access to a major road that gets the attention of our town promptly during a winter blizzard.

That said, trekking down (and then back up again) a snow-laden mountain road is difficult, and I dreaded it. And so, begrudgingly, I decided that this year, I’d buy a pair of snowshoes for the sole purpose of making the snowy hike down to our car a bit more effortless. And it worked.

The new snowshoes, when coupled with powder baskets for my trekking poles, not only made the journey down our snow-swamped road fast and efficient but fun.

I ended up spending the weekend hiking through our mountain with ease, in an absolute winter wonderland; something I never would have done had I not wanted to show our snowy road who was boss with complete spite. Best of all, my daughter joined me, and we had a blast together.

The ability to change our perspective is powerful and fuels success, and in the end, by changing my own about trekking down our snowy mountain drive, I unlocked a brand new winter sport that I never had really given much thought to, and that is in line with my passion for the outdoors.

Is there something that you need to change your perspective on? Perhaps that new assignment or account you feel that your manager just saddled you with? Could it be something more dire, like the loss of a job? It could be that it’s an opportunity that will change your life, for the good, forever. Something that was unexpected that turns a trial, be it large or small, into a triumph.
