How the Uber could survive in the coronavirus

Although the CEO of Uber said to investors that the coronavirus won’t kill their business, it’s obvious that the business of Uber was hugely affected. In the US, Uber rides are down as much as 94%. The share of uber is offline, the Uber driver is decreased. The worst case is that because of shelter-in-home policy, few people need to go out and take the Uber. Therefore, in order to survive during this specious period of time, Uber needs to turn into a big platform for all work.

The first work that becomes popular after the lockdown is Uber Eats. Right after the lockdown day of California, I received the message that Uber Eat had uploaded many more restaurants and provided each customer coupon to generalize the Uber Eats. Apart from the Uber Eat, Uber now launches an effort to help drivers find other work during coronavirus crisis. Recently, all the Uber drivers received an announcement that Uber has launched a driver app called the Work Hub. It designed to help drivers earn money with the company’s other ventures. Drivers could receive orders by Uber Eats, Uber Freight, and Uber Works. Moreover, it also posted many opportunities that other companies are looking for.

It’s maybe easier for an Uber driver to earn more money, but it’s hard for the Uber company to earn more money. Uber needs to make some solutions to battle coronavirus. For example, they already gave drivers millions of face masks. Since the car is a relatively close room, so it’s easy to spread the coronavirus. With the protection of the face mask, both the drivers and the passengers will have a safer experience. Therefore, the little cost of face mask could earn larger advantages.

Moreover, since the decrease of Uber drivers, Uber could also launch the car renting business. Before the coronavirus crisis, Uber rent cars to Uber drivers. Right now, Uber could directly rent cars to the Uber passengers. Small cars renting stalls are a good idea for Uber to put their cars. Passengers could only walk several steps, get the car, and drive to the destination. Passengers could give back the stall near the destination, and walk several steps. Similarly, Uber could also rent the bicycle to public people. Instead of driving a car, riding a bicycle is less possible to get the virus. This also considers the people who don’t have the driver’s license and want to get out. However, no matter renting cars or renting bicycles, it’s critical to guarantee disinfection, especially during this special period.

During this period, the delivery business is really hot. When other companies are headcount freezing, Amazon enlarged their business dramatically. Since Uber already has many Uber drivers who could act as a delivery, Uber could also generate the delivery service. At least it could cooperate with Amazon, from ride-sharing to labor-sharing. But in the long run, it’s better that Uber could make their only delivery chain. The Uber drivers could choose to deliver people or deliver freight, or, deliver both at the same time. This business has several advantages. Firstly, it could save the cost of delivery. Secondly, Uber drivers could have much more working opportunities in this period of time. Thirdly, Uber could earn more money during the break of coronavirus. Also, Uber could build their own delivery chain during this time, and make their own delivery business after the coronavirus break.

In a word, Uber needs to turn into a big platform for all work instead of just focusing on riding in this special time. Maybe this special time also provides a chance for Uber to launch a new business.
