Have every piece of mail scanned and emailed to you

Did you know the United States Postal Service (USPS) will email you a scan of each piece of mail in transit to your address for free? Each day you receive an email with a scan of each piece of mail coming to you that day. This is only available in certain areas, though it seems to be fairly broad. And of course, this article only applies to US addresses served by the USPS.

So if the scans are already created and stored, why not get access to them on a regular basis? Why would you want to? Well aside from the fact it feels like the future, it is also great for security. If the USPS sends you your list of items for the day, and you paycheck was listed there but is missing in your mailbox, it narrows down the possibilities of what happened to it.

So what is to prevent a bad guy from signing up for your mail to know when the checks come in? The signup process is fairly robust. It uses the same type of identity verifications you may have seen during credit checks, such as asking which of the following addresses you’ve never been affiliated with, or which of the following phone numbers have you had in the past, etc. If that process fails, you can also appear in person at specific post offices with a government-issued photo ID and they can confirm your identity manually.
