Have you ever just felt “down”? Kind of like you had a dark cloud over your head following you? I remember I was a young student athlete at a Division 2 college at Northwest Missouri State…

Preparation for class

I have always bene interested in mythology, which prompted me to take this course. Since I was not too familiar with the gods, I did some research. First, I familiarized myself with the names of the Greek and Roman gods, then I reads brief synopsis of each god. Doing this research gave me a sense of confidence before the first class.

Hour 1.5–2.5

08/21/2018

On the first day, the first part of class was run-of-the-mill first day. We went over the syllabus, class expectations, assignments etc. Hearing students complain about Divisional A courses and seek recommendations for an “easy” Divisional A, I was little apprehensive about the course, and had pre-conceived notions about the course. However, the course expectations and assignments are right on par with my other courses. The second part of class we discussed what exactly is classical mythology and why some cultures are deemed classical and others are not. I was surprised to learn that we would study more than Roman and Greek mythology, which got me more excited for future class meetings. For the remainder of the class we defined classical and mythology; so, we can have a better understanding of what those words mean together. We also tried to come up with inclusive meaning of the word story.Discussions like this challenge me to see if I truly know the definitions of words. In some cases, I know how to properly use a word, but when trying to give a definition, or give it a finite answer, where each part is necessary and essential, it can be difficult. The assignment for that class was to read Narcissus and Echo, and to come up with five biggest questions a human being can ask.

Later that evening, I began the reading. Prior to reading, I knew Narcissus was so in-love with himself that he died. However, I did not know any of the details nor did I know who Echo was. The story was an easy read and interesting. Now on to the questions.

The questions made me think of my life and every thought-provoking event that happen in my 22 years of life. Often times, I ponder over questions such as: “what is my purpose” or “is it worth it”. Ever since I began college these have been reoccurring questions. With important decision to be made such as: loan amounts, choice of a major, choosing the right internship, and many more, I question every choice I make. I also often times question love. After experiencing a heart break, or two, I changed my views on love. Questioning whether unconditional love and monogamy was real. All in all, having to answer these questions forced me to look back and question my past decision and have a plan for my future.

Hour 2.5–3.5

08/22/2018

My boyfriend and I were watching Hercules (the cartoon) and I found this to be the perfect time to boast about my class. I told him the entire story of Narcissus and Echo and discussed future readings. Since I was able to recall the information and explain it in detail, I knew I was grasping and retaining the inform.

Hour 3.5–5

08/23/2018

In class we discussed salient features of Narcissus and Echo. These features are also the foundation for what to identify in future readings.

Assignment: Five biggest questions.

1. What is my purpose?

2. How will it all end?

3. Is there a higher power?

4. Is unconditional love real?

5. Is it all worth it?
