If Logic was a Religion

People identify themselves in different ways; some identify themselves on institutions, some on views, some on money but majority of us do it on religion.. I’m a Hindu! I’m a Muslim. I follow Christ. etc. And believe me or not the biggest identifier is The Religion.

I have always wondered why religion (as we know it) should be considered as an identifier at all! Can’t there be some other identifier that unites the world in a better manner? But before moving into answers to these questions, let’s discuss religion first.

So, what exactly is religion? I believe religion is nothing but faith. A set of rules people believe in to guide their lives in the right direction. And they term their overseer in this path as GOD.

God gives us the strength to overcome adversities, is what people believe. God and religion shows us the true path, a righteous path one must follow. So, then I ask you this, why do we need so many different Religions? Why do we need so many different Gods?

I’m no expert, but I am pretty sure all religions give the same teachings. Live your life peacefully. Maintain harmony with other people and nature. Don’t think ill of anyone, don’t do ill to anyone. Always try to help others around you. Take care of your body and mind. Exercise and meditate daily. Don’t go down the path of drugs. Don’t let your ego control your actions and many more teachings like these. I would say these are the the lessons found in every religious book you will ever read, along with a few more.

Everything good till now, right? Now I think a question of mine deserves an answer.

Aren’t all of these teaching simply LOGICAL? Isn’t it simple logic that we all should live harmoniously and peacefully with each other. Isn’t it simple logic, that one mustn’t do drugs, or fight with people or envy others? Isn’t it simple logic, that we should take care of our body?

So, to all my religious readers today, I propose an idea. How would you like the idea about a religion named LOGIC. I mean we are doing the same things any logical atheist would do, if he/she is a good person. Why do we create barriers amongst ourselves just because of some books and scriptures.

Has anyone ever seen god? If you really want to follow someone, I would say follow the person who wrote these holy books, because that person is surely very wise. But instead, we follow a mythological figure and place our faith in that figure.

Well I say we follow logic instead. Logic isn’t wrong, that’s why it’s called “Logic”. I mean logic doesn’t approve of war, or the feeling of enmity or envy or greed. So would it be really bad if we considered logic as our religion and followed it?

People say it’s easier to connect with someone of the same religion as they practices same customs. But since each religion (as we know it) has different mythological figures and hence different customs, potential conflicts arise. But wouldn’t it be nice if everyone just followed Logic. There wouldn’t be any mythology and everything would be based on objectivity and rationality.

Another thing I hear from people that follow any religion is that it gives them a strength from the inside. They claim that it was their GOD that saw them through during tough times. Well let me tell you folks, it wasn’t some imaginary god who did that, but your own people. It is your parents who always watch over you, who take care of you when you are in trouble. It is your friends around you that help you lead a happy life. It was the love you had for your beloved, that gave you the strength to push forward no matter what, just so you could see them again. It wasn’t just some imaginary figure, it was the people around you.

It all make sense now doesn’t it. The more friends you make, the more harmoniously you live with people, the difficult it is to quit and thus you push through your difficulties to achieve greatness for them. No great person who achieved something, upon achieving them ever said that they did it for themselves. The credit always goes to either their parents, or friends or loved ones, their kids or somebody else. True strength come, when you are fighting for someone else, not yourself. And guess what, this isn’t true because its written in some book. It’s true because it’s simple logic. We will probably give up a hundred times before we achieve something for ourselves, but when we do something for somebody else, there is a sense of responsibility. We feel we must do this. That feeling isn’t there because some book says so. That feeling exists because it’s who humans are.

People also say religion teaches us values and enable us to become righteous. Instead of following someone we’ve never met, isn’t it more logical to follow someone we know very truly of? Like Mother Teresa, or Gandhi, or Nelson Mandela. Those people are the prime example of how people should live their lives. An even bigger example would be our own parents! Why follow someone imaginary, instead of following the two people who gave us their everything! Who didn’t sleep nights just so we could sleep soundly. Who sacrificed their needs just so we could have our wishes. Isn’t that more logical?

I don’t oppose any religion, but I firmly believe that instead of following religion as we know it, we should follow LOGIC, which teaches us to become rationale and decide objectively the right and wrong way of leading the path. And if LOGIC can’t guide you to become righteous then no religion can be of help either.
