Failing to plan is planning to fail

One of the most important steps, if not the most important step, in good website development is planning. Having a outline of where you want to go and how you will get there changes the entire dynamic of building a successful website.

Designers and developers alike use a technique where they “mark-up” a mock-up of the project, or of an existing project for guidance and inspiration. Typically, the designer will be starting this from scratch and interpreting the client’s needs. The developer will use the designers mock-up as a way to visually and programmatically build the website.

As I have engaged on my journey, I have found that this is so impactful in the consistency and cleanliness of the code after I’m done writing it. Breaking the site down into “pieces” or components, really save time and headache. As a new developer, I haven’t had the pleasure of using some of the popular frameworks yet, but I definitely understand how they can help the efficiency and effectiveness of the developers efforts.

Understanding what elements I’m using to represent the different attributes of the page, ensures that I can create a experience that’s fluid and friendly. Grid layout versus a flexbox may be the choice for a specific section. Planning that in advance, can also help, in creating code that can be duplicated again, for other elements. This would be considered and example of a component. A grid for flex card elements like service cards.

Additionally, using components and libraries can also cut down on production time. Not having to write each element of the page from scratch will allow more time for the visual debugging and perfecting of the site.

Yes, you can build a website from scratch with no plan of action. Will you finish it? Will it be operable? Will it make sense for the user? Without a plan, the likelihood of any of these items being a yes is very low. However, planning your attack of how to connect the dots will ensure a great user experience and client satisfaction.
